Liverpool Attractions - Museums

The City of Liverpool has a history built on world travel.  From Slave Ships to liners, the ferry across the mersey to passenger ferries to the isle of man the power of the sea is central to the city of Liverpool. The Merseyside Maritime Museum itells the amazing story of one of the UK's ports, and the stories from across the globe.

For many, it was an exciting gateway to the beginning of a new life in other countries, but for others, its facilitation of the slave trade made it's presence felt with distressing circumstances. The Merseyside Maritime Museum is one of Europe's largest maritime museums, covering seven acres next to the prestigious Albert Dock, and including full-size historic vessels, quaysides and two docks.

The HM Customs & Excise National Museum recounts the exciting story of smuggling and contraband from the 1700s to the present day, so you can take a look at the never-ending battle which existed between smugglers and duty men.

The museum also holds the National Collection of the Department of Customs and Excise, one of the most important collections of its type held anywhere in the world.

It also includes an extensive display of tools of the job, prints, paintings and photographs relating to the work of the Department of Customs and Excise. While other items look at the ingenious and often dangerous world of smuggling, prohibited goods and concealment.

The displays reflect the history of the merchant navy and shipping from the 13th century, plus the incredible development of the port of Liverpool and its international links. There is also a programme of temporary exhibitions, public events, lectures and courses for those who wish to develop their understanding further.

Galleries include Transatlantic Slavery: Against Human Dignity, Art & the Sea, and Lifelines: A Story of Merchant Ships and Seafarers incorporating The Battle of the Atlantic. There is also a temporary gallery with a changing programme of exhibitions which detail different aspects of maritime history.
