Super Lamb Banana

The Lamb Banana has fast become one of the most instantly recognisable and popular symbols of the City of Liverpool.

The Super Lamb Banana was the original work of Japanese-based artist Taro Chiezo. Commissioned for the Art Transpennine Exhibition of 1998, the sculpture was a controversial, but welcome addition to the public art arena in Liverpool. Standing an impressive seventeen feet tall and comprised of concrete and steel, the statue first attracted interest from its original position on the Strand. The unusual artwork was created to warn of the dangers of genetically modified food, whilst being appropriate to the city of Liverpool due to the port's rich history in the trade of lambs and the import of bananas.

The European Capital of Culture is a European Union project designed to highlight the culture of the continent of Europe.  Cities are selected that illustrates and deserves the title of 'Capital of Culture'. Competition is always fierce, as every city bids to showcase its contribution to the world's cultural landscape. As of 2000, the award has often gone to two or more cities, and in 2008, Liverpool shares the title with Stavanger in Norway.

800th anniversary of Liverpool

Some 300 events are organised for this year’s 800th anniversary of Liverpool: a veritable feast of concerts, conferences, exhibitions, flower shows, processions, re-enactments, walks and talks.   It reaches a peak on August 28, dubbed Liverpool 800 Day, whose festivities climax with one of the world’s largest firework displays.
